Together with the Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau Foundation, PHAROS - The Post Group has digitally restored the Veit Harlan film DIE GOLDENE STADT.
The Agfacolor film is the second German full-length color feature film, which premiered in Berlin in November 1942 and was one of the most successful films of its time with 31 million moviegoers - awarded the International Film Chamber Prize at the Venice Film Festival.
For the first time, the contemporary document is now being shown to the public with both ends intact. According to Veit Harlan, the film was to end on a positive note and the corresponding ending had already been shot. Joseph Goebbels, however, insisted on a tragic ending.
The footage of the unpublished ending was found, but the sound negative is still considered lost. The dialog was reconstructed with the help of lip reader Lars Grombelka and subtitled.
The restoration was based on four different image sources: some of the material was in an extremely poor, very fragile and color-degraded condition. The retouching was carried out by Markus Kappelmeier, the lighting was determined by Andi Lautil and the sound was restored by Thomas Orthofer.
